Dolmen / Chapel Srºdo Monte - Penedono

The Dolmen / Chapel of Nossa Sra do Monte, was declared National Monument on 1961 December 5th., it is a huge (megalithic) prehistorical grave including a polygonal chamber of 7 - 9 vertical stones and a long corridor. The use of its structure to build a chapel in the XV century, shows the mistic and spiritual sense of the monument. It is one of the rare christianized dolmens in Portugal. The state of the Chapel of N. Sra. Do Monte is a ruined one for the last 70 years. In the day of Nossa Senhora do Monte, 7 crucifix come on a parede from the villages on the neighbourghood .Between 1991-1993, several archeological works allow us to state that the grave was built, used and closed around 5.000 years ago. This monument is placed in the center of a necropolis with more than five graves, being one of them "Dolmen do Carvalhal" at a 50 m. distance, and Dolmen de Sangrino. This "Dolmen of Carvalhal" has an antechamber "hall" shaped, which is an unusual architectural characteristic within the megalitical monuments of Portugal center Region.
